Passover celebrants in US show solidarity for detained journalist

Jewish people celebrating Passover put an empty place at their tables to show solidarity with Wall Street Journal's Evan Gershkovich, an American journalist of Jewish descent detained by Russian authorities on espionage allegations since late March. The social media campaign seeks to pressure Russia to release Gershkovich, adding to the long list of journalists and dissenters incarcerated by the regime. Opponents to Putin's government are silenced with bogus charges in Soviet-style, an editorial in The New York Times opined. Among them are Russian dissidents and journalists such as Alexei Navalny and Vladimir Kara-Murza. The arrest of the 31-year-old Gershkovich demonstrates Putin's resentment towards Western democracies and principles.
