The Kansas City Chiefs used a fourth quarter scoring drive to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20. The win was the first of the season for the Chiefs, while the Bengals dropped to 0-1.
The teams traded field goals in the first half but it was the Chiefs who got into the end zone first. With 3:50 to go in the second quarter, Chiefs quarterback Pat Mahomes connected with tight end Travis Kelce for a 14-yard touchdown pass.
The Bengals responded to tie the game early in the third quarter when rookie resiund Joe Burrow found wide receiver Tyler Higgins for a 27-yard touchdown strike. The Chiefs scored late in the third quarter when Mahomes connected with wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a 19-yard touchdown pass.
Despite having the lead late in the game, the Bengals couldn’t hang on, with running back Samaje Perine scoring the final touchdown of the game on a two-yard run. The Chiefs held on for the 23-20 win.
Mahomes finished the game with 32-45 passing for 372 yards and two touchdowns. Burrow, meanwhile, had 312 passing yards, 29 rushing yards and a touchdown in his NFL debut. The Chiefs (1-0) will host the Los Angeles Chargers next Sunday, while the Bengals (0-1) will look to bounce back against the Cleveland Browns at home.
