Chiefs Edge Bengals for Return to Super Bowl, Despite Injuries

The Kansas City Chiefs completed their remarkable comeback with a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Sunday's AFC Championship. The Chiefs became the first team in 30 years to reach three Super Bowls in four years.

Facing long odds, quarterback Patrick Mahomes drove the Chiefs down the field with 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Mahomes' hobbled right ankle saw him scramble for five yards for a first down at the Bengals' 42-yard line. The 15-yard penalty resulting from Mahomes getting shoved after he was out of bounds gave the Chiefs enough of a boost for kicker Harrison Butker to make a 45-yard game-winning field goal with three remaining on the clock.

Mahomes' efforts were supported by the entire Chiefs roster, including wide receiver Mecole Hardman; Hardman hadn't played since Week 9, yet he was ruled active for the AFC Championship game. Hardman caught 25 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns prior to the Chiefs' trading Tyreek Hill before the season. With Hardman back in the lineup, the Chiefs ruled out receivers Justin Watson and Ihmir Smith-Marsette.

The Chiefs had to overcome an onslaught of injuries to clinch the victory; cornerback L'Jarius Sneed went down with a concussion, linebacker Willie Gay Jr. with a shoulder injury and wide receivers Toney with a twisted ankle and Hardman while getting tackled.Fortunately, the Chiefs heads will get their full arsenal of weapons to the Super Bowl, set to face the Philadelphia Eagles. Kansas City coach Andy Reid will face his old team, while tight end Travis Kelce will play against his older brother Jason, who is a center on the Philadelphia squad.
