Deja Taylor, the mother of the 6-year-old who shot his teacher Abigail Zwerner in January at Richneck Elementary School, has been charged with child neglect and recklessly leaving a loaded firearm so as to endanger a child. Taylor was indicted by a Newport News Grand Jury, but the investigation into the shooting continues, as authorities may press charges on additional persons responsible for the incident. Zwerner, who required hospitalization for nearly two weeks after the incident, filed a $40 million negligence lawsuit against the school district officials, including former superintendent George Parker III, former Richneck elementary school principal Briana Foster Newton, and former assistant principal Ebony Parker, among other defendants. Though school officials received several warnings that the 6-year-old had a gun and a "violent mood" before the shooting, prosecutors announced earlier in April that the boy would not face criminal charges. The shooting at Richneck Elementary School underscores the need for improved gun control measures and school security to prevent future incidents.
