An explosion at the R.M. Palmer Company chocolate factory in West Reading on Friday resulted in an as-yet unknown number of injuries, two reported dead, and nine unaccounted for. The factory is known for its seasonal chocolates and has been a fixture of the Reading, PA community for over 70 years. According to its website, there are 850 employees at the West Reading headquarters, though it is unknown how many were present during the explosion. The cause of the explosion is under investigation, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was expected to visit the scene on Friday night. Although residents were asked to avoid the area, the authorities declared there was no imminent danger. A command center has been set up to coordinate local and state agencies’ efforts as rescue and investigation efforts continue.
