The Los Angeles Unified School District and Service Employees International Union Local 99 have reached an agreement following a three-day strike. The union represents around 30,000 school support workers who were calling for better pay and working conditions. The agreed-upon terms include a 6% ongoing wage increase retroactive to July 1, 2021, 7% ongoing wage increase retroactive to July 1, 2022, 7% ongoing wage increase effective July 1, 2023, and $2 per hour increase for all employees effective January 1, 2024. The deal also includes a $1,000 bonus for current employees who were with the district in the 2020-21 school year, raising the Los Angeles Unified School District minimum wage to $22.52 an hour, and health benefits for part-time employees working four or more hours a day, including coverage for qualified dependents. The hours and compensation for paraprofessionals serving students with special needs will increase, and there will be an investment of $3 million in an Education and Professional Development Fund for SEIU members. The United Teachers Los Angeles union is undergoing separate contact negotiations with the district, and the deal must still be voted on by the full union.
