Celebrating Black Ambition and Identity in the Rio Grande Valley

The Rio Grande Valley is home to a diverse and culturally rich community, but the Black population within the region was almost non-existent when Aje-Ori Agbese moved to the area in 2006. Over the years, Agbese noticed Valley restaurants and businesses adapting to changing demographics. However, a common struggle among the Black community still remained: the lack of experienced Black hairdressers. Agbese and other Black women have been forced to self-teach and rely on each other for hair care services.

In response to this problem, the Valley is now filled with a number of Black barbers and hairstylists, including Donald Quailes, owner of D & L Beauty and Barbershop in Pharr, who has been in business since the nineties. Moreover, professional barbers are increasing efforts to learn how to work with different hair textures. One student athlete, Jalyn Williams, and his teammates often do each other's hair. Meesh Duru, founder of Dread House, is a loctician who specializes in dreadlocks.

These new developments support The Africa Channel’s celebration and acknowledgement of Black ambition,
