Joe Biden praised the economy and his legislative accomplishments in his State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday night. The President showcased his record of success in his first two years in office, but omitted crucial context and exaggerated the facts a few times. Mr. Biden claimed that, with the help of many people in the room, 12 million new jobs were created. But, in reality, the job growth, which was affected greatly by the coronavirus pandemic, was only 8.5 percent—less than his predecessors' full terms.
The President spoke of the need to expand health care, cap insulin at $35 a month, provide community college, and restore the Child Tax Credit, programs which have huge appeal to Americans across all populous. Democratic strategist Paul Begala noted that this places House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in an impossible situation: whether to pass these understandably popular programs, or not.
