What Caused the Deadly Storm That Hit California?

A "bomb cyclone" hit California on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, leaving destruction, chaos, and at least two deaths in its wake. The storm caused damaging winds, downpours, and even a possible tornado, ripping down trees and causing power outages that affected hundreds of thousands of people. San Francisco was hit especially hard, with commuters on the Bay Bridge stuck in traffic for hours due to a big rig truck that toppled over during the storm. The storm also caused several injuries, downed power lines and trees, and canceled flights at San Francisco International Airport. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service were stunned by the destructive storm, which they described as an "explosive cyclogenesis." Even as the storm gradually tapered off across California, its impact will be felt for some time.
