Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has signed a controversial bill into law that will restrict drag performances in public venues and locations where minors could potentially view them. The move has sparked rampant criticism, especially considering a resurfaced photo from 1977 of Governor Lee in a dress from his Franklin High School yearbook.
The bill in question targets ‘adult cabaret performances’, ‘male or female impersonators’, ‘topless dancers’ and/or ‘similar entertainers’, criminalizing them for providing any entertainment that appeals to a ‘prurient interest’. Tennessee Code further defines how this should be applied. It also carries a prison sentence of up to six years for repeat offenses.
Governor Lee has faced heated discourse and protests over the passing of the bill in Memphis and Nashville, with protestors screaming 'fascist' and 'liar'.
