What is causing the mass exodus of foreigners from Sudan?

Fighting between rival generals in Sudan has led to a wave of evacuations of foreigners from the country. The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Japan have either completed or are in the process of airlifting embassy staff, diplomats and other foreign nationals out of the country. An estimated 16,000 Americans, most of whom are dual Sudanese-US nationals, remain in Sudan as their families are based there. Some are making their way to the main seaport via a United Nations-led convoy, monitored by US military forces. Meanwhile, other foreigners unable to secure a place on an organised flight, are attempting to travel long distances by road to cross the border to Egypt. The military and paramilitary forces continue to fight each other despite a hoped-for ceasefire during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr. Hospitals have been overwhelmed as the death toll has risen to over 420, including 264 civilians, and over 3,700 people have been wounded.
